-Review- Unglued Devotional

UNGLUED Devotional
60 DAYS OF IMPERFECT PROGRESS
By: Lysa TerKeurst

I don't think I have ever read a book before where it felt like the author was speaking directly to me or that they were so in tune with my own thoughts and feelings. This devotional felt more like a guide to me. Every daily devotion taught me a lesson that I needed/wanted to learn. Now that I've finished the book I've been keeping it in my car and when I'm waiting in the school pick up line its a good time for me to grab it and reread a lesson or two. Its been so helpful for me in times of frustration and uncertainty. I feel refreshed and at peace after reading through a chapter that speaks to me. I don't just go chapter by chapter but sometimes just thumb through until I find what I need to hear. Each daily chapter starts with scripture and the Thought for the Day. Then it goes into the quick reading lesson. My favorite part is at the end, each lesson ends with a prayer. Sometimes I still feel like I'm not sure if I'm saying the right things or if I'm doing this prayer thing right, so this has been a guide for me in the prayer department. I love finding books like this that aren't just a one time read, it is a daily guide for me that I will continue to read over and over.

Book Description:
This companion devotional to the bestselling book Unglued provides encouragement to help readers handle emotional struggles. Including a daily opening Scripture, Thought for the Day, devotion, and closing prayer, this book helps readers begin a 60-day journey in learning to positively process raw emotions, such as fear, anger, and regret.

Just Like Jesus -Review-

Just Like Jesus
by Max Lucado
A Heart like His.

He wants you to "think and act like Christ Jesus." Phil. 2:5

Gods plan for you is nothing short of a new heart.

A forgiving, compassionate, listening, God-intoxicated, worship-hungry, focused, honest, pure, hope-filled, rejoicing and enduring heart.

There are twelve chapters in this book and each one focuses on different areas of your heart, teaching you how to be just like Jesus. There is a study guide for each chapter in the back of the book that challenges you to take a deeper look into your own heart and see how things could be. I have highlighted, underlined and made notes all through this book. I highly recommend this book.
My favorite quote from this book is:
From the basin of his grace, he scoops a palm full of mercy and washes away our sin.

Book Description

God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you there. He wants you to be just like Jesus.

Can you think of a better offer?

Jesus felt no guilt; God wants you to feel no guilt. Jesus had no bad habits; God wants to do away with yours. Jesus had no fears; God wants the same for you. Jesus had no anxiety about death; you needn't either. God's desire, his plan, his ultimate goal is to make you into the image of Christ.

But how does this change occur? And why does the change seem so slow? If God wants me to be just like Jesus, why do I still seem just like me?

In Just Like Jesus, Max Lucado helps you answer these questions. He helps you understand God's wonderful ways of transformation. Would you like to know more? Then read on. And remember: God loves you just way you are, but he refuses to leave you there. He wants you to be just like Jesus.

-Review & Giveaway- I Couldn't Love You More

I Couldn't Love You More
by Matt Hammitt and Jason Ingram

About the book:
In the same manner as touching picture books like bestsellers Let Me Hold You Longer and Love You Forever, I Couldn't Love You More tells a sweet, loving, yet powerful message: I couldn’t love you more, but there is someone who does. Through the unique relationship of adorable animals, the book shares that Christ is always with you and he loves you more than you can imagine. This engaging picture book combines lovable and irresistible images with the lyrics from the song (co-written by Jason Ingram and Matt Hammitt). Matt is lead vocalist for Sanctus Real, a Grammy-nominated Christian rock band. The song is on Hammitt’s latest album, Every Fallen Tear. When Matt and his wife, Sarah, were halfway through her pregnancy, they discovered their son would be born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a rare congenital defect. Matt and Sarah’s son, Bowen, was born on 9/9/10 and received a huge following through the Hammitt’s blog (bowensheart.com), K-LOVE, and ABC News. A portion of the proceeds from the book goes to the foundation the Hammitts’ have started to help parents with children who have this heart condition.

My thoughts:
Jesus has so much love for us and to know that is an amazing feeling. This is more than just a book,  it is a story of His love. It is important for my son to know just how much he is loved. I tell him all the time. He tells me all the time. He needs to hear it and he needs to feel it. We are all so busy that sometimes we get into a routine of things and it can feel just like it, a routine. Love is not routine. I make sure to love on my baby boy every chance I get, just because. Just because I love him. He knows that the only love greater than mine is the love of Jesus.
We really enjoyed this book and will continue reading it nightly. I think this is a great book to use as a tool to help establish your childs faith. I hope all children know of His love. I hope they all are able to feel His touch through anothers embrace.
I must also add that the illustrations in this book are absolutely stunning. The artist Polona Lovsin is an amazing artist. We loved all of the pictures, cover to cover, just beautiful!

100 Devotions, 100 Bible Songs -Review-

100 Devotions, 100 Bible Songs
Created by Stephen Elkins
Illustrated by Tim O'Conner

About the book:
Kids can read, sing, and learn while they spend time with God!
In 100 Devotions, 100 Bible Songs children can read a devotion, sing a beloved song, and say a prayer all while learning and spending time with God. Perfect for before school, bedtime, or anytime, these short devotions will be fun for kids and help parents grow their children’s faith.
With bright illustrations, great music, and powerful messages, kids will have fun while they learn to walk with God and apply the message of the Bible to their everyday lives.
My thoughts:
What a great book!!! I don't think I can possibly express how much I love this book. I wanted to review this book because I had been on the lookout for something I could use to teach my three year old son more about God. We have both been learning so much from this book. We read about God, we look and talk about the beautiful illustrations and then we listen to the song that goes with each devotion. To finish it off we read the bible verse and say our daily prayer that is provided. This is a wonderful book!

Married Mom, Solo Parent -Review-

Married Mom, Solo Parent: Finding God's Strength to Face the Challenge
By Carla Anne Coroy

About the book:

For married women who feel like single parents.

Bookstore shelves are full of parenting resources for moms who are newly divorced or widowed. But where do moms turn if they feel like a single parent--but they’re not? Whether he is away on business, deployed in the military, or obsessing over a computer game, dad may not be available for a variety of reasons. Moms who parent in this situation still need help and don’t necessarily relate to the advice given in divorce recovery or single parenting resources.
Married Mom, Solo Parent is a common-sense, down-to-earth look at the struggles wives and mothers face when their husband is not actively involved in family life. Writing from her own experience as a married single mom, Carla Anne Coroy will help wives and mothers sort through their questions, such as: Can I do this alone? How do I raise kids to honor their father? How do I give my children a healthy perspective of marriage if they never see one in action? With practical suggestions, anecdotes, and biblical teaching, this book will encourage moms to see their position as a high calling, to find healing for their worries and frustrations, and to tap into God’s strength for help in facing the daily challenge of being a married mom, solo parent.

About Carla:
Carla Anne Coroy runs the Married Single Mom blog at www.carlaannecoroy.blogspot.com. She speaks regularly and serves as a staff writer for an online Christian women’s magazine Mentoring Moments for Christian Women. Carla Anne lives in Canada with her husband and four home schooled children. For more information, visit www.carlaanne.com.

My thoughts:

The title may read 'Married Mom, Solo Parent' but I feel this book is for every woman: single, married, kids, no kids. I took alot from this book, in fact there are few pages that aren't marked with my highlighter. I learned not only how to deal with my situation at hand but how to talk to God, how to be a better parent, friend, wife, sister, daughter, etc.  In reading this book I realized things about myself, things that I was doing or thinking that were hindering my relationship that I never even thought would be an issue. I'm excited to see the changes that will soon take place in me, in my home. This is a fabulous book. I've already promised my bestie she could borrow it and I know it will benefit her greatly as well.

-Review- Cherished

About the book:
How can she believe God cherishes her when she can't forgive herself?

Kelli London once dreamed of being a songwriter. As crazy as it seemed, she hoped that God would use the lyrics that came to her while she slept. She dreamed about Brian too, that the love they shared would be a forever kind of love. But choices she'll forever regret upended her hope . . . and turned her dreams to dust. When those dreams come knocking once more, she's forced to deal with the pain of the past.

Heather Anderson's life has spun out of control—first, an affair with a married man, then a one-night stand with the drummer of a popular Christian band that left her devastated. Broken and alone, she cried out to the only One who can save her. And He did. But that's just the beginning, because now she must leave behind the only life she's ever known.

Two women with shame-filled pasts form an unlikely friendship. What does God's forgiveness look like for them? Will they ever believe that He loves them . . . and can still offer them a life where they are cherished?

My opinion:
I enjoyed this book very much. I was able to connect with the characters and feel their emotions right along with them. Being a somewhat new follower of Christ myself it was a great read for me to see how these women prayed together. I need to pray more. I don't use prayer as often as I should. I'm sure most of us have at some point in our lives questioned how God could forgive us for the awful things that we have done - this book is great at showing His everlasting love.

I didn't realize Cherished is the second book in a series. The first book is called 'Faithful'. I will look for it, as I'd like to read the characters stories from the beginning.

-Review- Knitting Knee-Highs

Knitting Knee-Highs
Sock Styles from Classic to Contemporary
By: Barb Brown
Published by: F&W Media

Hmmm.....while it is a beautiful book and the socks are absolutely gorgeous, I definitely don't think this is a book for beginners like myself. I am new to knitting and was very excited when I saw this book on the list to be reviewed. However, after many failed attempts, I think I need a little or well maybe a lot more practice before I try it again. I love the patterns, they are very pretty but I feel that I can't give a true review of this book based on my knitting level. I think more knowledge and experience on my part is needed before trying them again. I passed the book onto my mom(a more avid knitter) to borrow and made sure to point out which patterns I liked best in hopes that I'll find a nice pair of knee-highs under the Christmas tree this year!

Smokin' Six-Shooter -Review & Giveaway-

Summary:
Russell Corbett was all cowboy and wasn't about to let a lady lasso him! But Dulcie Hughes had him tied up in knots from the moment she nearly collided with his combine. She rode into town with her fancy rental car and city clothes to claim her secret inheritance. And neither tall tale nor handsome rancher would deter her from exposing a years-old cover-up at the Beaumont property. She expected to find answer, not fall in love. But like the threatening thunderhead on the horizon, the truth would come fast and fierce, and there would be no escaping the consequences.
My Review:
I could not put this book down. I loved it. It's a murder mystery that kept me on my toes. Every time I thought I had it figured out a new character would be introduced or a main detail would change and throw me  back off again. It was a fast read and very entertaining. I will definitely be looking for more books by B.J. Daniels!

-Review- God's Wisdom for Mothers

God's Wisdom for Mothers
Compiled by Jack Countryman

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.  Proverbs 3:5-6

God's Wisdom for Mothers is a compilation of bible verses that are neatly organized so that you can find what you are looking for when you need it most. This isn't a book that you would normally read straight through but more a reference book that you will continuously come back to and learn from. There is a content index at the front of the book that is listed in categories and sub-categories so that you can easily flip to the verse you need whether it be about wisdom for daily living, cherishing your family, praying for one another, or so many more. There is also extra pages in the back of the book for you to keep notes or write your daily prayers.

This is such a wonderful little book. It is the perfect size to fit into your purse or even keep on your nightstand so that you always have it on hand. It is a perfect gift for the Mothers in your life.

-Review- Love by Calvin Miller

Love: Cultivating Spirit-given Character(a six-week study) by Calvin Miller

I really enjoyed this study guide. I've never really thought about the word Love and how often it is thrown around in today's society. We use the word Love on a daily basis for everything and in this guide it teaches you how God intended Love to be. This book gives you daily reads and personal reflection questions that really make you think. I used the book as a daily devotional and while I really enjoyed it there were some days where I read more than just one days worth as I was left wanting more. It's a great book for a small study group, especially those that have limited time to devote to daily readings.

Love is only one of nine studies in the series on the fruits of the Spirit by Calvin Miller. I look forward to looking into the rest of the series.
